Randal Hayes Stageberg was born in Chesapeake, Virginia, on November 26, 1990, to parents Rick and Sandy Stageberg. Randy, as she is commonly called, has two brothers Michael (older) and Cody (younger).
Randy began gymnastics when she was 4 at Ocean Tumblers, because her parent decided to occupy her time and energy. Randy spent most of her gymnastics career at Ocean Tumblers, until 2001 when she switched to Excalibur Gymnastics, training under Jim and Dena Walker.
While still at Ocean Tumblers, at the age of 9, she was a member of the 1999 and 2000 National TOPS team. In 2002 Randy competed at the Level 8 Regional Qualifier. Shortly there after she tested out of level 8, skipping level 9 and started competing as a level 10 in 2003. At 12 years old Randy placed forth in the all-around at the level 10 Virginia State Championships. By the time that Randy hit the age of fourteen, she was a Junior International Elite gymnast.
In 2005 Randy qualified to the 2005 US National Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana, proved to be her break out competition. Relatively unknown at the time, Randy turned heads and won the hearts of many US gymnastics fans. Explosive personality and impeccable form helped Randy to a 15th place finish for both days, and a spot on her very first national team.
Randy’s first year a Senior International Elite started off at the 2006 USA vs. Japan/New Zealand friendship meet in Houston, Texas. Not only was this Randy’s first international assignment, but it was her first competition under the new Code Of Points. She had an excellent meet placing second on vault and fourth on floor. She also received a first place finish with the team. The US Classic was a stepping stool for the US Nationals. Randy used the competition as test run for the new skills that she had been practicing. She placed sixteenth in the all-around. Shortly following the US Classic, Randy competed at the US National Championships. Randy, again made the national team, by placing 10th in the all around. Not only did she go home as a national team member, she took with her a first place medal on the floor exercise. A title that she share with 2005 World Champion Alicia Sacramone.
When 2007 came rolling around, Randy got started showing off her new routines and skills at a few local competitions. Not only did she gain some more competition experience, she won two out of 3 meets that she entered. In March Randy was scheduled to compete at the Gymnix International meet in Canada, in the level 10 portion of the competition, with a couple of her Excalibur teammates. The day before competition began, Randy was added to the US team roster to compete along side Sarah Demeo, Amber Trani and Corrie Lothrop, in the International portion of competition. On the first day of competition Randy helped the US team to a second place finish, at the same time placing 3rd in the all around. Not only did Randy qualify to three event for uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise, she placed top 3 in all of them. Two bronze medals (uneven bars and balance beam) and a gold medal on the floor exercise. Randy placed eleventh all-around at the American Classic. She only competed on beam and floor at the US Classic. At Nationals, Randy had trouble on bars both days.
Randy came back with a vengeance in 2008. She opened the year by placing third all-around at the Gymnix International. In event finals, she won a bronze medal on beam and a gold medal on floor! In May, she easily won the Elite Qualifier and qualified for the Visa Championships. She next placed third all-around at the US Classic where she also won floor. Randy placed in the top ten at US Nationals, qualifying for the Olympic Trials. Unfortunately, Randy was forced to have shoulder surgery in the fall. Her next step in her career will be competing for the University of Florida.
